At the end of January, 1916, 20th Division moved into the Ypres salient and on the night 12th/13th February the 11th Rifle Brigade of 59 Brigade moved into the front line between Lancashire Farm and Canal Bank where they remained until 18th February. During the night of 16th February the enemy machine-guns were active and it is likely that they were responsible for the death of Herbert Roy who was killed in action on that day.
